Thirty months.
That’s how long Allie Parker and Jennifer Thomas have been feuding in the PGWA. Their
rivalry began in December of 2016, in a match that set the tempo for the war to come:
violent, intense, and relentless!
They would meet every few months, and each resulting conflict would make anyone’s list
of contenders for ‘Match of the Year’. But although every match had a winner and a
loser, nothing seemed to be getting settled between them. There were frequent calls
to the PGWA booking office from both Jennifer and Allie, each demanding a new
bout with the other.
Their clash escalated to a new level when, in the summer of ’18, Allie became
the PGWA Champion. Now, Jennifer not only had her ongoing desire to defeat
her nemesis, but with the added bonus of gaining ten pounds of leather and
gold in the process. However, things had grown so intense between them, Jennifer
became overwhelmed by the urgent need to punish Allie. To that end, she
recruited Desi Derata in a sinister scheme to double-team the Champ. Jen was,
of course, instantly disqualified once Desi joined in the attack, and Allie kept
her belt, but that was cold comfort for the Champ, as she was battered
unconscious by the dastardly duo, and her precious belt was draped over her
limp body.
This went too far for PGWA Commissioner Susan Green, and she suspended both
Jennifer and Desi for 90 days. Jen seemed to take the time off to do some
soul searching, and she apparently wasn’t very happy with what she discovered.
As she recently told LadySports.com, “I let my hatred of Allie Parker get the
better of me, and I did some things that I’m not very proud of. I don’t
need to use such tactics to win, and I’ve resolved to adhere to the rulebook
from now on. That way, when I do beat Allie and take the belt, it will be
entirely fair and square.” Jen demonstrated her new steadfastness in a
match with none other than Desi Derata, and it was Desi who was very much
the rulebreaker in that bout.
Impressed by Jennifer’s pledge to turn over a new leaf, Commissioner Susan
Green has scheduled a new title match between them, to be held on June the
15th in Los Angeles.
Perhaps underscoring that Parker and Thomas are, in a sense, two sides of
the same coin, Allie has been undergoing her own transformation of late.
From the first day she won the title, she declared that she would be a true
fighting champion, and she put out an open challenge to any contenders who
wanted to try and take her belt, going so far as to sign a stack of blank
contracts at the booking office. In the months since, she has had more…
many more, in fact…title defenses than any other previous PGWA Champ in a
comparable span of time.
Some have speculated that that need on Allie’s part to fight anyone, anywhere,
anytime was a result of the manner in which she received the belt. Rather
than winning the title in a match, she was awarded the belt by virtue of being
the top ranked contender at that time, as then-Champion ThunderKitty was medically
barred from wrestling for several months, and she felt it would be unfair to
keep the title if she couldn’t defend it.
But for some (mostly her fellow contenders), it was questionable whether Allie
Parker had truly deserved the belt. There were lockerroom rumblings that her
crown as a gift that was granted, and not a prize that was won. That’s poppycock,
of course… Commissioner Green had the indisputable right to put the belt on the
woman she felt was most deserving, and her choice was Allie. And certainly her
steady stream of victories ever since has more than established her championship
worthiness.
But there were other voices in the lockerroom…voices of Allie’s friends and allies,
who wondered what toll the ceaseless parade of matches might be taking on her.
She was forever jetting across the country to face new challengers, scarcely
giving time for injuries to fully heal. And all too many of those contenders…J
essie Belle Smothers, Barbi Hayden, Jordynne Grace, Ray Lyn…seemed just as
eager to hurt Allie as they were to beat her.
When, her friends would ask, would enough be enough?
That question began to find an answer in the past few months. Other wrestlers
noticed it first: Allie had become surly and uncommunicative. Then the fans began
to take note of the fact that Parker was all too willing to unleash roughhouse
tactics in her matches.
But it was in her two most recent matches that the change became complete, as she paid
scant heed to the rules as she battled and mauled Monica Garcia and Shelly Martinez.
Monica, in particular, suffered a devastating beatdown of epic proportions, with Allie
inflicting far more punishment on her than she deserved.
After repeated but unsuccessful attempts to speak with her in recent weeks, your intrepid
LadySports writer finally managed to get the Champ to agree to answer a few questions
immediately after her match with Martinez. Allie still seemed in a rage as she toweled
the sweat off of her face, her championship belt slung over her shoulder. I began to ask
her if she felt it was necessary to use some of the rough tactics she had employed in the
match, but she snatched the digital recorder from my hand and made her own statement.
“I didn’t do anything to Shelly Martinez that she wouldn’t have done to me if I’d given
her the chance,” Parker growled. “So I didn’t give her the chance. Let that be a message
to everyone in the future… Allie Parker is nobody’s doormat any longer!”
What about her upcoming match with Jennifer, I asked, which seemed to really set her
blood boiling. “In any other sport in the world, Jennifer Thomas would have been banned
for life after what she and Derata did to me! But instead she gets a vacation, and now
she gets another shot at my belt? This is just another example of Susan Green’s agenda against me.”
Cowgirl Susan, a genuine ring legend, is not only of course the woman who bestowed
the title belt on Allie, but she herself was the first PGWA Champion, and to date
is the only woman to hold the belt twice. What sort of ‘agenda’ was Allie alleging?
“She’s jealous of me, because she sees me winning every damn time, and she realizes
that I’m the greatest PGWA Champion ever. So she’s trying to wear me down by sending
scrubs like Garcia and Zeda Zhang after me, expecting that one of them will eventually
get lucky and pin me. But I’ve got news for you, Green…I’M NOT GOING TO LOSE!”
Mentioning as diplomatically as possible that her new attitude was perplexing for
her legion of fans, the brunette snarled, “Are the fans stepping between the ropes
and pushing themselves to the limits of their physical and mental endurance night
after night? Do they limp back to their hotel after each match, then drag themselves
out of bed at 6:00 the following morning so they can get on a plane and fly off to
fight the next wanna-be contender? No, all the fans want are an autograph and
a selfie and to get all handsy with me. I played nice with the fans, and in the
end do you know what it got me? Nothing I didn’t already have, and what I have
is the PGWA Championship. So I just cut them out of my life, and I’m a hell of
a lot happier now.”
Returning to the topic of her upcoming title defense in L.A., I bravely pointed out that
Jennifer Thomas has been perhaps her toughest opponent, and I wondered aloud if she had
any concerns going into this bout. The condescension fairly dripped off of her every
word as she snarled, “That runt has only given me trouble in the past because I’ve always
held back. But now she’s going to get 100% Allie Parker! In fact, let me make a
prediction: not only will I give her the beating of a lifetime, but when it’s all over
and this belt is once again wrapped around my waist, and the paramedics have to carry
her out of the ring on a stretcher, and when she finally wakes up, poor little Jenny
is going to quit wrestling forever, because she’ll finally know that she’ll never
be a match for me!”
I endeavored to ask another question, but the Champ had tired of this, and she brought
an abrupt end to our interview by turning away and stalking off to the lockerroom.
But she had left me with answers…as well as new questions. All of which, we suppose,
will be answered on June 15th when she once more steps into the ring with Jennifer Thomas.
