A HARDCORE SURPRISE
When American wrestler Nikki Roxx ventured down to Mexico
earlier this month to work with the LLF, she was expecting
an adventure. But she got a whole lot more than she
anticipated!
Literally minutes after arriving, Nikki...who speaks only
limited Spanish, so there was a language barrier to
overcome...was informed that her first match would be in
the town of Tampico...which was 7 hours away! One long
bus ride later, Nikki (who had to feel as if she was a
contestant on "The Amazing Race" at this point!) grabbed
her gear and found the arena, where she learned two
things: First, that her scheduled opponent would be Luna
de Magica, and secondly, that their bout would be a
hardcore match!
"Oh, wow!" the blond said when relating her adventures to
LadySports Online. "I had no advance notice of this, but
sure enough once I was in the ring, I learned it was
true!" In the battle that followed Nikki, best known for
using speed and agility in her matches, had to rely
mightily on her raw strength and stamina instead. And as
the fight raged on, Roxx found herself battered by broken
fluorescent bulbs, thumbtacks, chairs, and she even
somehow found herself slugging it out atop a scaffold!
But while Nikki fought valiantly, such hardcore tactics
were as foreign to her as was Mexico itself, and she
ultimately found herself overwhelmed by Luna, who is much
more adept at such brawling. And almost tragically for
Roxx, Luna apparently decided to not only win the match,
but to cripple the blond in the process! The Luchadora
had just finished slamming the barely-conscious Nikki
across a bed of thumbtacks when several other wrestlers,
watching the match from the back and knowing full well
what deviltry Luna de Magica was capable of, rushed into
the ring and attacked her, knocking her out and rescuing
Roxx from certain doom. The intruders then draped Nikki's
body over Luna, and the match was won by the American
which the fans enthusiastically call "Gringa!" While such
interference would result in an instant disqualification
any other time, in a hardcore match, it's perfectly legal!
Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of Nikki's (mis)
adventures. Because of the time it took to treat her for
her injuries, she missed the bus back to Monterrey.
Luckily, the LLF promoter refused to leave her alone in
Tampico, and he elected to remain behind with her so they
could catch the next bus. The only motels with rooms
available had somewhat, shall we say, unsavory
reputations. When she checked into one, the promoter
informed her, "You must be in the lobby at 4:00 AM to
catch the bus. And whatever you do," he added with dead
seriousness, "don't open your door for anyone!"
“Well, after having a look around I could totally
understand why I shouldn't!" she says. "I was directly
across the street from the bus station in Tampico and to
three bars where everyone was drowning in the spirits and
wanted everyone to have a good time. Now, I was scheduled
for a radio interview at 11:00 the next morning.
Obviously, I was not going to be there. After sleeping
about three hours in this very accommodating...please note
the sarcasm...hotel, I was woken up at 4:00 to catch my
bus. With my Spanglish, I was able to find out which was
the right bus back to Monterrey, luckily."
"I arrived in Monterrey at 1:30 PM. Totally missed the
radio show. I get dropped off at the apartment the
promoter has for the girls he brings in. I get to sleep
for about three more hours before my match against the
masked Arianna at Arena Colliseo." [For details of this
match, see the feature story elsewhere at LadySports
Online!]
Amazingly, despite all of the surprises and the hardships,
Nikki is raring to go back to Mexico! She's scheduled to
wrestle again for the LLF in October. So, Nikki has
proven herself to be one of the toughest ladies both in
the ring as well as out of it!
There are also hopes of having her return to the PGWA ring
soon as well.
