PGWA CHAMPION TRACY TAYLOR

A Chat with the Champ

November 15th of 2008 saw a stunning change in the world of the PGWA, as champion Nikki Roxx fell to challenger Tracy Taylor in a best of three falls title match.

Since her debut five years ago, the Kaneohe, Hawaii native had been marked as one to watch by industry insiders, with predictions of great success for the exotic beauty. And certainly, Taylor's earlier foray in the PGWA, in which she feuded with Melissa Coates, was well-received by fans.

But still, it came as a surprise to most that she was able to beat Roxx, who is by many measures at the peak of her game now. And what perturbs many is that Tracy... who previously had been a rule-abiding scientific wrestler... so blatantly flaunted the rules in this match. But when pressed on her cheating, and the criticism of fans, the new titleholder remains untroubled. "It's a free country", she says. "Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. And anyway, I didn't cheat... until I absolutely thought it necessary."

Not surprisingly, within hours of the title change, there were calls for a rematch, and Nikki Roxx herself told the PGWA office she was ready and willing to challenge for the belt anytime, anywhere. However, under the PGWA's bylaws, the champion has a wide latitude in selecting her opponents... and from the way she's speaking, it doesn't sound as if Tracy is about to step back into the ring with her predecessor anytime soon. At least, not with the belt on the line. "Maybe I’ll face her again, but let's admit it, she had her chance to beat me, and she failed. And it was a two out of three match, which is virtually like three separate matches, so my goodness, how many chances does this girl need?"

But what about this heel turn of hers? "I'm sick of being the 'nice girl' and always getting stepped on. For once, I wanted to have something that showed I was not someone to mess with. I did this for me!" Running her fingertips across the gold plate of the leather strap slung over her shoulder, Tracy smiles and purrs, "And it feels good."

However she may have acquired the title, Taylor is making it clear that she intends to keep it for a good long while, and that she's ready to travel the world to do so. "I am absolutely ready to wrestle anywhere in the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, or anywhere else the PGWA would like to send me... first class, of course. Maybe overseas they'll realize that hairpulling isn’t cheating."

And in the future, when the history books reflect on the Taylor Era of the PGWA, what does the new titleholder expect they'll say? "I’m definitely here to prove that I am a champ to remember. It's not going to be easy to forget this hipshaking surfer girl, who came over from a small island in the middle of the ocean and made a huge impact on women's professional wrestling! You have yet to see my lava flow...!"
