ALL THIS AND NEVAEH, TOO

Dark Angel of Mercy

by S. Mata

"Nevaeh" may be Heaven spelled backward, but everything else about this exciting young wrestler is moving forward, and that most definitely includes her ring career!

If you ask me for one word that would sum me up, it would have to be... Greatness!

As she tells it, "I didn't grow up the little girl who loved wrestling." But high school friends back in Dayton , Ohio got her interested in the sport. And while for many, the appeal of wrestling is simply in the action, for Nevaeh, there was something more... something emotional. "Wrestling, to me, is about dedication. It's about setting goals and accomplishing them, and it's about building your self-esteem. It's not something that everyone can do, so I'm proud knowing that I am one of those select few who have succeeded at this."

Standing at 5'4" and with reddish-brown hair and green eyes, she looks almost too precocious to be a fighter. But beneath the Girl Next Door looks is the soul of a champion, with a determination to succeed against all odds. How determined? She started her career back in 2004 at an almost-pixyish 112 lbs. but now tips the scales at a solid 130, thanks to the added muscle she's put on in order to slug it out with her larger opponents. Make no mistake, this girl is serious about her wrestling.

"I'm very outspoken," she says with a hint of pride. "I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I tend to get an attitude very easily. I'm not extremely friendly when first meeting someone until I get a feel for them. A big dislike of mine is inconsiderate people... people who try to pretend things are okay even if they aren't. You have to let it out." And when people do "let it out," and it's not always to her liking? "I am very strong minded, and I like to think I don't let people walk all over or take advantage of me." Opponents should consider that fair warning.

Nevaeh's career has taken some wild turns of late. Having long been a popular "good girl," she was faced with a crossroads when her stable, the Irish Airborne, decided to turn heel. But if she agonized over the decision to join them for long, there's little evidence of that. Indeed, it would seem that Nevaeh is relishing the role of villainess even more than her male partners are enjoying being the bad guys! Perhaps having been a rule-abiding wrestler was just a sham, and she's been a bad girl at heart the entire time?

But that doesn't mean she's only in this business for herself. Asked what would make her most happy in life, Nevaeh doesn't speak about herself. Instead, she reveals, "I would be happiest to see my daughter happy someday in a successful marriage with healthy children and a fulfilling career."

She's also sentimental enough to cite as her best ring memory to date the night she won her first match wrestling in front of her hometown crowd, because her family was there to witness it. Outside of wrestling, she says unhesitatingly that her proudest moment was the birth of her daughter.

But however little her own ego plays into her persona, her iniquitous acts in recent months have generated a great deal of attention from the spectators, both for and against. Asked about the fans, she just shrugs and says, "I have all sorts. Some are energetic and motivating for me. And some you just want to jump the guard rail and beat up."

So, although not overly concerned about the reaction of the fans, and not necessarily pursuing wrestling to stroke her own ego, Nevaeh is nonetheless dead serious about her career, and that includes her training. Each day includes an hour of cardio, thirty minutes of weights, and if possible, ring training. "I also try to eat healthy... but I also love going out to dinner," she adds with a laugh. Then, growing serious again, she explains, "I think everything is important, but I focus on cardio and abs. In the ring, I work on quickness. Being one step ahead of your opponent can never hurt."

And she puts any advantage she can get to work for her in matches. "I'm known for being aggressive," she proudly confides. Among her arsenal of moves are an array of neckbreakers... each more devastating than the last... and a complex guillotine submission hold that has put away more than its fair share of victims.

And her training has also served her well by limiting her ring injuries. "The worst I've been hurt were a couple of broken ribs a few days into my original training," she says. The reason why she was hurt? "Wasn't training hard enough," she sighs. But she didn't let that stop her from continuing her training and becoming a wrestler.

Her skill and her work ethic have garnered her an ever-increasing number of requests to work across the country. "I've wrestled in Georgia , North Carolina , Kentucky , Pennsylvania , Indiana , and all over Ohio . HWA, IPW and MPW are the three companies I work for the most, but I have wrestled for many others as well. I haven't had the honor of winning any belts yet, but I do work regularly for the Heartland Wrestling Association, which is a privilege all its own. I have also won Best New Up and Coming Wrestler in a few feds."

One thing she makes clear to promoters is that if they bring her in, she's there to WRESTLE, not simply hold some guy's coat at ringside. "You have to be tough and stand strong and let people know you can wrestle, and that you are not just eye candy" she claims as her mission statement.

She also takes issue with people who continue to exist that wrestling is unreal. "I want to take the word ‘fake' out of their vocabulary," she growls. "Because everybody knows you can't fake gravity!" Spoken like a woman who has sailed off of the top rope and landed hard.

Given her aggressive nature in matches, it might come as a surprise to many that away from the sport, Nevaeh is undergoing the often grueling study to be a nurse. Considering the damage she inflicts on opponents, it seems almost incongruous that she would minister to the ailments of others outside of the ring. But Nevaeh is nothing if not complex... often tantalizingly so.

Take her free time... what precious little there is of it. She's often either hard-charging on the basketball court, or else quietly enjoying a good book.

Asked to describe her personal motto, she says gently, "Clouds are enormous, but they all have a top. It's up to someone with a dream to come and reach them."

Then, with the mischievous twinkle in her eye of a born bad girl, she adds, "Winners commit and losers promise."

And one thing is certain... Nevaeh is committed to being the best!
