Q & A: Heather Divine

by Shiai Mata

The American Southwest, land of searing deserts and craggy mountains, doesn't breed 'em timid, and that especially goes for their wrestlers. Heather Divine has earned her reputation in the sport the hard way... she's earned it, one match at a time. She's tough, focused and driven, and she also adheres to the Old School code. LadySports Online is proud to present this exclusive Q&A with Heather!

Ring Name: Heather Divine
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 140
Hair: Dark brown, shoulder length.
Hometown: White Sands, NM

LADYSPORTS: When did you first get into the sport?
HEATHER DIVINE: I started training in September of 2000 and had my first show as a manager in October of 2000.

LS: Who trained you?
HD: "Mr. Mexico" George de la Isla.

LS: What was your biggest influence to become a wrestler?
HD: I always loved wrestling growing up, but the big influence in getting involved came from Shawn Michaels' federation in San Antonio; the first indy show I saw, I was hooked.

LS: What other sports do you have an interest in?
HD: I enjoy figure skating actually; but I also like to watch wilder sports, like rugby.

LS: How would you describe yourself in terms of attitude, personality, likes, dislikes, and strengths?
HD: Out of the ring I am very eager to please and like to keep the people around me comfortable. In the ring I try to be assertive and always get what I want. I like people who are confident in themselves but I dislike it when that confidence turns to arrogance.

LS: What is your most marked characteristic?
HD: Depends on who you ask! I would say my single-mindedness in the ring.

LS: What are you favorite foods, music, clothes, cars?
HD: I like good old home cooking and don't get it nearly enough. I'm into all kinds of music and love pickup trucks!

LS: Describe a typical day of training for you. What is most important in your workout?
HD: My typical workout consists of 30-40 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes of weights. I think that good cardio is most important so you don't lose your wind in the ring.

LS: How would you best describe your ring style?
HD: Old-school heel.

LS: What moves are you best known for?
HD: My finisher is the 'Divine Intervention'.

LS: Have you ever been injured in the ring?
HD: I tore my ACL, have gotten nearly knocked out a couple of times, rolled my ankles a few times, and have had more bruises, cuts and scrapes then I could ever count... .

LS: Who have been your toughest opponents?
HD: Char Starr and Nayati Mattox; Ann R. Key is also a severely tough customer as well.

LS: Who are your allies?
HD: Heather Divine works alone.

LS: What has been your most memorable win?
HD: That would be my first match, when I won the CTPW Intergender Title. Between it being my first match ever and being against the impeccable Flaming Rose, who I watched before I started working, it was definitely unforgettable.

LS: What was your worst loss?
HD: That was when I lost the CTPW Women's Title; I believe it was to Venus.

LS: Who is the one wrestler you would most like to face in the ring, but haven't yet?
HD: Realistically, I would love to work with Molly Holly someday. Completely unrealistically, it would be a supreme honor to share the ring with William Regal or Chris Benoit.

LS: What type of match do you enjoy the most?
HD: I prefer singles matches; I'm not a huge fan of "hardcore" per se but I like to go outside the ring and smash around on chairs and stuff every now and then.

LS: What sort of reactions do you get from people when they learn you are a wrestler?
HD: People totally don't believe it, because I'm so quiet and reserved in my "real life".

LS: What is so special about this sport to you?
HD: Wrestling gave me a place to belong, and brought me through a rough time in my life. I owe it a lot.

LS: What are your fans like?
HD: Fans are very diverse; the best fans are the ones who are always there and add to the show so much! My fans either love me or really love to hate me. The coolest thing is getting recognized; once I was recognized out-of-state, which was very cool.

LS: What is the one thing you would most like to change about the sport?
HD: The politics. I wish that promotions could work together to grow as a whole.

LS: If you had the power, what one thing would you do to improve the sport?
HD: Bring back some of the mystery, I think.

LS: Where have you wrestled, and what titles have you held?
HD: I have wrestled all over Texas , in Oklahoma , Kansas , Arkansas and California . I have held eight different titles, some more than once. I was also the 2004 Texas Womens' Champion.

LS: What are your thoughts on women participating in the sport?
HD: I think that a woman should not be portrayed as a "wrestler" unless she has done the time in a reputed school and has worked just as hard as the guys. I'm not opposed to a woman playing up her sexuality to some degree, but you've gotta have ability to back it up. I'm not a big fan of strippers being paid more than the workers just to walk somebody to the ring and flash some skin, but it does happen.

LS: What was your most unforgettable moment in the sport?
HD: I have so many moments: my first match, the utter shock on the faces of my family when they first saw me wrestle, various moments during different matches that stand out, either by being extremely wonderful or extremely weird. It's been a heckuva ride so far.

LS: Any regrets?
HD: I regret not starting to wrestle sooner.

LS: What would you do if you couldn't be in wrestling?
HD: I would find something equally wild to get into, I'm sure. But if I ever left wrestling, I would miss it immensely.

LS: What is your personal motto?
HD: Do the best you can and leave as little collateral damage as possible.

LS: What would make you most happy in life?
HD: It would make me happy for my family to be happy. And finding true love, of course.

LS: Anything else you'd like to add?
HD: Wrestling has taught me many things but the big one is, you can do anything you set your mind to. When I started working, I had never struck out completely on my on in any aspect of my life. I was terrified of speaking in front of crowds. I took this challenge, all on my own, and have achieved some very gratifying success from it.
