Q & A: Annie Social

“I love my job! I get to beat on chicks.”

It's a rare day when LadySports extols the virtue of someone who got their start in the business as an oil wrestler. But then, Annie Social has proven herself to be a rare woman indeed... a genuinely talented worker with the skills and the determination to succeed, no matter the obstacles. Effort such as that deserves to be recognized, and so we're proud to do just that now!

LADYSPORTS: Welcome, Annie! Can you tell us, when did you first get into the sport?
ANNIE SOCIAL: I had my first event in January, 2001 with DWOW as an oil wrestler.

LS: And who trained you?
AS: I was trained by Trent Acid, Gary Wolf and Mike Kehner at the PWU Animal House, and also spent some time in Toronto training with Ron Hutchison. I also had a great deal of help from friends along the way... Devon Moore, Detox and Teddy Fine, to name a few.

LS: What was your biggest influence to become a wrestler?
AS: I actually fell into wrestling accidentally. It was one of those "in the right place at the right time" situations. The promoter for DWOW and WEW happened to show up at the bar where I was working and offered me a spot on the show. I wasn't a lifelong wrestling fan or anything. I was actually a boxing fan growing up and I am currently an MMA fan.

LS: How would you describe yourself in terms of attitude, personality, likes, dislikes, and strengths?
AS: I have a very low tolerance for bullshit and drama. I'm generally a pretty nice person until someone crosses me or people close to me. I enjoy being challenged but definitely do not tolerate disrespect. I'd have to say my biggest strengths are my courage and my mean streak.

LS: What is your most marked characteristic as a wrestler?
AS: Heart. I will fight anyone, any time, any place regardless of size, gender or otherwise.

LS: Describe a typical day of training for you. What is most important in your workout?
AS: I'm naturally pretty strong and can build muscle rapidly, so lately I've been focusing on cardio. I try to get in one to two hours a day when I can. I am also a fan of yoga.

LS: How would you best describe your ring style?
AS: Opportunistic. I do whatever it takes to get the job done.

LS: What moves are you best known for?
AS: Lots of strikes and some submissions, mostly jiu jitsu based choke variations.

LS: Have you ever been injured in the ring?
AS: I took a bad fall on my shoulder. I took a break for a month but never had it checked out. It's been two years, so hopefully I'm ok.

LS: Who have been your toughest opponents?
AS: Mickie Knuckles and Sara Del Rey.

LS: Who are your allies?
AS: April Hunter and Roxie Cotton... she's my tag partner, but we have NO PROBLEM taking it to each other.

LS: What has been your most memorable win?
AS: Winning against Sumie Sakai at JAPW... she can really go... I have TONS of respect for her.

LS: What was your worst loss?
AS: My worst loss was to Lizzy Valentine in Spain for NWE. I always underestimate the little blondies for some reason!

LS: Have you had any “Why am I still doing this?” moments?
AS: Not at all. I love my job! I get to beat on chicks. What's not to like about that?

LS: Who is the one wrestler you would most like to face in the ring, but haven't yet?
AS: Jamilia Craft. She's the new hotness on the east coast. She's also my baby cousin and I'm bitter I didn't get to beat her into the business yet.

LS: If you had to retire tomorrow, who's the one person in the world you'd most like to have your final match against?
AS: Jamilia Craft.

LS: What type of match do you enjoy the most?
AS: I enjoy just about every type of match as long as I have a good opponent.

LS: What sort of reactions do you get from people when they learn you are a wrestler?
AS: They don't believe me. They always think I'm too small.

LS: What is so special about this sport to you?
AS: The wrestling business is the only place where I feel like I belong.

LS: What are your fans like?
AS: My fans rock. They're what keeps me going.

LS: If you had the power, what one thing would you do to improve the sport?
AS: I'd encourage more camaraderie amongst wrestlers. We're all in this together. We should be helping each other instead of hating on each other.

LS: What are your thoughts on women participating in the sport?
AS: It's twice as hard for women to break into this business. It's definitely a male dominated sport. I think it's great that women are finally starting to get more recognition for working so hard.

LS: What's the single best piece of advice you'd give to someone just starting out in the business?
AS: Don't let anyone tell you "you can't". If it's in your heart and you give 100% of yourself to it, you will go far.

LS: Any regrets?
AS: I wish I had started training earlier.

LS: What would you do if you couldn't be in wrestling?
AS: I'd probably open a bar.

LS: What is your personal motto?
AS: "Don't let anyone make an ass out of you." - My Dad

LS: What would make you most happy in life?
AS: A drama free existence... haha... but there are way too many haters out there in order for that to happen. By the way... thanks, haters... I succeed just to get under your skin!

LS: Anything else you'd like to add?
AS: Thank you for the interview. If anyone wants to know anything else about me check out anniesocial.com or myspace.com/anniesocial215
