Q & A: ANGELINA

"This is not a game or a fashion show to me."

"This is not a game or a fashion show to me."

So says this brunette battler from the Lone Star State. Like a lot of young newcomers to the sport, she has her eyes fixed on big things for herself. But, unlike many others, she's not fooling herself as to how to achieve them... she knows it's going to take a lot of hard work. She's no awestruck kid, and when an opponent steps into the ring with Angelina, she'd better bring her 'A' game, because she's in for a FIGHT!

The Stats:

LADYSPORTS: When did you first get into the sport?
ANGELINA I began training at the Texas Wrestling Academy in January of '06.

LS: Who trained you?
A: Rudy "Boy" Gonzalez... the best in the business.

LS: What was your biggest influence to become a wrestler?
A: As a child, Luna Vachon used to scare the devil out of me. Her look was tough, scary, and totally unusual. But I always believed that one day I would be tough enough to fight her. My grandmother was a Marine during the Korean War as well... she is a one tough lady who always believed in me. In fact, I was raised by Marines in my family. I was born tough!

LS: What other sports do you have an interest in?
A: I played softball, volleyball, basketball, and also ran track and cross country. I love competing... everything in life is a competition. I also enjoy watching football and boxing.

LS: As a worker, how would you describe yourself in terms of attitude, personality and strengths?
A: I am gonna do what I have to do to win. Nobody is going to stand in my way. I am confident in my ability. I spent two years in the best school in Texas... or anywhere for that matter; no one is tougher or better! I am in it to win it. This is not a game or a fashion show to me.

LS: Describe a typical day of training for you. What is most important in your workout?
A: Training begins with our squat sets: four sets of fifty squats, 25 push-ups, and 25 crunches. There are no breaks, as there are no breaks in a match. Squats are the most important part, because your leg strength is the base for everything that we do both at the school and in the ring. We also do our warm-ups which are the rolls and bumps. We do drills and chain wrestling everyday, as well as two matches.

LS: How would you best describe your ring style?
A: American style, mat wrestling.

LS: Did you base your ring style or even your persona on any one particular wrestler?
A: My persona is an extension of myself; you may think you love me one minute, but I will make sure you hate me when I am through. I was trained in the "American style" of wrestling. My coach's style is very "old-school", where you MUST tell a story and you don't need a million moves a match.

LS: What specific signature moves are you best known for?
A: I use a DDT, sometimes an Enseguri, and I love Sunset Flips.

LS: Have you ever been injured in the ring?
A: No, I have had bumps and bruises along the way; it's all a part of learning. But I am pretty good at protecting myself from anything major. That is what training is for, to learn how not to hurt yourself so that you can work the next day. You cannot make money if you are hurt.

LS: Who have been your toughest opponents?
A: Becky Bayless and Jessica James.

LS: Who are your allies?
A: I don't need them. I fly solo. You can't trust anyone.

LS: What has been your most memorable win?
A: Winning a "date" with Becky Bayless... for her Texas Ladies Title, that is!

LS: What was your worst loss?
A: Losing that match with her for the title... she is underhanded and a cheater.

LS: Who is the one wrestler you would most like to face in the ring, but haven't yet?
A: Simply Luscious, who was also trained by Rudy Boy Gonzalez.

LS: What type of match do you enjoy the most?
A: Singles.

LS: What sort of reactions do you get from people when they learn you are a wrestler?
A: "Don't mess with her, she can beat you up..!"

LS: What is so special about this sport to you?
A: Being able to control the reactions of the fans. It is all in your hands. People don't have to like me, and I don't have to be nice.

LS: What are your fans like?
A: The men come to see me and the would love to be me... or maybe they want to beat me? But I'd like to see them try.

LS: If you had the power, what one thing would you do to improve the sport?
A: Keep the fans out of what goes on behind the scenes. They "know" too much.

LS: Where have you wrestled, and what titles have you held?
A: Throughout South Texas for Texas Wrestling Entertainment. It won't be long, I will take the Texas Ladies Title from Becky. I have not forgotten.

LS: What are your thoughts on women participating in the sport?
A: Go hard or go home. I have never given any special treatment because I was a girl. I had to work that much harder and be at the standards that Simply Luscious and Vicky set before me. I help set up the ring, pass out flyers, sell tickets... I do everything the boys do.

LS: What was your most unforgettable moment in the ring?
A: My first match and stepping into the ring in front of a crowd for the first time was something special.

LS: Outside of the ring, what are your favorite movies, TV series and musicians?
A: Movies: The Crow, Walk the Line, and American Gangster. TV: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Law & Order SVU.
Music: Metal, baby! Sepultura, Slayer, Pantera...

LS: Any regrets?
A: Not starting sooner... but no regrets other than that.

LS: What do you suppose you would be doing if you couldn't be in wrestling?
A: I can be anything that I want to be, a doctor, a pharmacist... but I don't think about it. I don't want to be anything else. This is my profession, my job... not a hobby.

LS: What is your personal motto?
A: I have more than one... "True friends stab you in the front." - Oscar Wilde
"Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades." - my grandfather

LS: What would make you most happy in life?
A: Being able to wrestle every day and see the world.

LS: Anything else you'd like to add?
A: Quitters never start quitting... they never had it in the first place. – RBG
