LADYSPORTS SPOTLIGHT: Allie Kat

Q & A: Allie Kat

"When people can do more with less, it's truly an art form"

Masks, of course, are tremendously popular among wrestlers of both sexes in Mexico and, to a
lesser degree, Japan. For whatever reasons however, they've never really take hold in American
wrestling.

Perhaps that's because it takes a certain special kind of person to don a mask and make it work. In Allie Kat, we think we've found that person... and we think you'll agree, once you read this exclusive interview!

THE STATS:

Height: 5'3"

Weight: Well, you should never ask a lady her weight... but then again, I've always preferred the term
women's wrestling over ladies wrestling, so I guess I can answer that one... I stay around 128,
depending on my weights to cardio ratio.

Hair: Currently black and pink... but I've been known to have blue, purple and some other colors in
there, too.

Hometown: While I currently reside in Central Illinois, my hometown is Yakima, Washington.

LADYSPORTS: Welcome to LadySports, Allie Kat! Tell us, when did you first get into the sport?
ALLIE KAT: I had my first match August 2011.

LS: And who trained you?
AK: Harker Dirge.

LS: Who have been your biggest inspirations to be a wrestler?
AK: I grew up watching wrestling and I loved it... so pretty much anyone in the 80s to early 90s. I loved all the color and characters wrestling had back then, and I greatly miss that with today's wrestling. That being said... my very favorite and most inspirational women wrestlers were Sherri Martel, Luna Vachon and Madusa. I've actually had the pleasure of meeting all three of them and they were the nicest women. I only hope I can inspire today's youth to believe in themselves and follow their dreams!

LS: What are you like in the ring, personality-wise?
AK: I'm very colorful... you can't miss me out there! I'm friendly and I like to have fun... I shake hands, sign autographs and take pictures with the fans. But when that bell rings, I'm all business. If my opponent pulls my hair, I'll pull their hair right back. I'm not about to let anyone use dirty tricks to get over on me just because I'm a nice girl.

LS: Describe a typical day of training for you. What is most important in your workout?
AK: Soooo... this is a hard question because I try to do something different every day and balance weights, cardio, yoga, etc. The most important part is definitely my yoga. I can't say enough good things about it; you develop strength, flexibility, mental awareness, balance, a different way of breathing... so many benefits to it. And I highly recommend Diamond Dallas Page's Yoga programs. They absolutely changed my life!!!

LS: How would you best describe your ring style?
AK: Well, I'm still new enough to the sport to say I'm still developing it. I've brought a different game plan to each and every match and have done something new and different each time. I like to use holds and punching, kicking, forearms, etc. I can get pretty rough in the ring. I've been told I represent ‘girl power'... which is one of the coolest compliments I could be given!

LS: Who have been your toughest opponents to date?
AK: Hmmm... I'd say my last match with Thunderkitty at Zero1 USA Supreme Wrestling. I just couldn't get the advantage against her. Every time I thought I had her where I wanted her... she'd get the advantage back. She's a tough woman and definitely not afraid to cheat!

LS: And who have been your biggest allies?
AK: I really haven't had any allies yet... I'm kind of a lone cat that way, I guess.

LS: What has been your most memorable win?
AK: My very first one! I was wrestling another masked woman... Mrs. X II. The crowd was behind me, it was the first time my parents were able to see me wrestle in person and I defeated her in about two minutes!

LS: And how about your worst loss?
AK: My first match was against Serenity, and she defeated me. About five months later, we had a rematch... it was my debut with a new promotion and my first TV match, so I really wanted to do well and get some revenge from our first meeting. I was on top for a little while... but she ended up winning in the end.

LS: Who is the one wrestler you would most like to face in the ring, but haven't yet?
AK: Wow... there are a lot, actually. I'd love to have a match against Mickie James... or tagging with Mickie James. I like Taryn Terrell a lot too... I'd like to tag with her. I think we'd make a great pair. Beyond that... I'd really like to wrestle MsChif, Mia Svensson, Sexy Starr, Taya Valkyrie, Solo Darling and Barbi Hayden, to name a few. I want to have as many different opponents in my career as possible. So often, a group of two to four women have to keep wrestling each other over and over. I don't want to get stuck in that rut. Variety is the spice of life!

LS: And if you had to retire tomorrow and could have only one more match, who would you most like to wrestle?
AK: I'd like to tag with Taryn Terrell versus the Bella Twins! Or if Madusa would come out of retirement... that would be my dream match!

LS: What is your favorite style of match?
AK: Wrestling... it's the name of the game. I like a lot of holds, not a lot of highspots. When people can do more with less, it's truly an art form I admire.

LS: Have you ever been injured in the ring?
AK: Knock on wood... nothing major yet. The worst thing I've had happen was a pretty good chip off one of my teeth in my first match.

LS: If you had the power, what one thing would you do to improve the sport?
AK: Again, tough question here. I have a lot of thoughts on this. But if I had to say one thing... I'd make women's wrestling more respectable. It's always been treated as T&A, a side show or an afterthought to the men's wrestling. And I take nothing against men's wrestling, it's amazing and I'm a big fan of it... but I'd like the same respect and opportunities to be given to women's wrestling.
Sure... there are promotions with just women's wrestling now. But what I'd really like to see is shows where it's more of a 50/50... half men's matches and half women's matches. Instead it's 90/10 or at best maybe 70/30.
What I'm getting at is most shows have zero or maybe 1 women's matches... maybe two at most and that's it. It's really hard to break in as a woman because there's so little opportunity. Most promotions have one or two women on their roster and then they might bring in someone new to face them every once in a while... but then it's back to the same.
I'd get rid of anything inter-gender. I despise the "girlfriend" storylines. I'd like to see more of women being treated as equals by the promoters, bookers, fans and other wrestlers, including having separate men's and women's locker rooms at shows. Most places throw them all in one room together to change... and that's not fair to the women or the men. Sure... usually the women will go to the bathroom to get dressed, but then they're in there while the men change. I'd like to see that change.
And separate training schools. Women have different body types and need to wrestle a different style then the men... but so many don't because again, a school might have one or two women and a bunch of men. The women have to learn to work the men's style.

LS: Any other sports you enjoy?
AK: I love women's gymnastics. They are probably the most un-appreciated, extremely talented athletes. The things those girls do are AMAZING!!!

LS: Any regrets?
AK: Of course... we all have regrets... but I don't dwell on them. If you focus on regrets, you never move past your mistakes and it'll kill you a little more everyday. Just remember, every day you wake up is a new chance... an opportunity to do better. We're all human, we all make mistakes. The true test of the kind of person you are is, do you learn from those mistakes and do better next time... or do you keep repeating them? I always try to view every mistake as a learning opportunity and a chance to improve the next time.

LS: What would you do if you couldn't be in wrestling?
AK: Not sure there... I love photography and animals. If I won the lottery, I'd definitely start an animal shelter to rescue homeless animals and find them good permanent homes. When I say a shelter, I mean like a very nice place they can live in the meantime... not in cages all day long. What a horrible life.

LS: Can you tell us what the one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in the sport would be?
AK: If you're still in school, join a sport. Be an athlete, work out, learn to eat right... all of it will help you in wrestling. Watch the masters... learn from them. Don't try to copy or be them... still be yourself, but learn from the great ones!

LS: What is your personal motto?
AK: I have a few, but right now... "I do what works for me". There will always be people looking for you to fail... trying to cut you down and make you lose faith in yourself. There will always be evil in this world... but you have to rise above it. Tune out the doubters. Be yourself... at the end of the day, we all have to look in the mirror and go to sleep with ourselves and live with our own actions. Don't follow the crowd, do your own thing! I don't want to be "like" anyone else. I just want to be the best Allie Kat I can be!

LS: And lastly, anything else you'd like to add?
AK: Just that I'm really looking forward to a successful 2013! I haven't gotten to do nearly as much in wrestling as I want to and that needs to change. I plan on making an impact everywhere I go this year! If you want to keep up with my goings and join "My Pride"... check out facebook.com/themaskedalliekat and like the page to get all my updates. Thanks to everyone that's supported me so far. I love the fans... especially the kids... nothing makes me happier than seeing a young girl smiling at a wrestling show. After all, I used to be that girl.

LS: Thanks so much for speaking with us, Allie Kat!
AK: Thanks for the great questions and thanks to everyone who took the time out to read my thoughts. I hope to see you at the matches soon!!!
