THE PGWA'S 7 DEADLY SINS

by Shiai Mata

Throughout history, humankind's greatest enemy has been itself. For all of humanity's accomplishments, it has been its own self-inflicted failings which have so often marked the pivotal moments of its existence.

That has never been more true than in professional wrestling, where personal failings, and even moral lapses, are not only tolerated, they're celebrated.

The result has been the development of what is colloquially known as the 'Rulebreaker'. But such a title doesn't begin to encompass what makes for what sport shorthand refers to as a 'Heel'. After all, even some of the most virtuous grapplers in the sport occasionally bend, and even break,a rule here or there. It's basic human nature.

And humans, by nature, also like to quantify things. Thus the development of the so-called '7 Deadly Sins', which supposedly describe all of mankind's moral failings.

The PGWA is certainly not exempt from the reality of rulebreaking. Indeed, many of the women who have passed beneath the organization's banners can be said to have epitomized some of the deadly sins that plague us all.

For the sake of this story, let us turn our attention to seven women who have recently plied their trade with the PGWA,

PRIDE

This is one of the most basic of failings, and also the most confusing. After all, aren't we taught to take pride in our work and accomplishments? So how could pride therefore be a sin? Well, when pride overwhelms you to the point where you feel you are superior to virtually one and all, then it crosses the line. And no woman best exemplifies pride better than PIPPA L'VINN. There is no denying that the British grappler is an outstanding wrestler and as fierce a competitor as one will ever find in the ring. Unfortunately, she knows that only too well. The utter contempt which she feels for virtually all of her peers is almost palpable. Yet, as the saying goes, 'Pride goeth before a fall', and it was L'Vinn's rampaging ego which set the stage for her shocking defeat at the hands of Nikki Roxx, a loss which cost the Brit the PGWA title!

ENVY

Like Pride, Envy is also so widespread as to be virtually impossible to avoid. Try as we might, it's impossible not to feel pangs of jealousy over the success of another. The danger is when we allow envy to grow to the point where it manifests itself into action. And when one says 'Action', they're often describing HAILEY HATRED, a woman who is a veritable force of nature in the ring, and an envious force at that. For all of her own amazing accomplishments, Hailey seems almost consumed by jealousy of the successes of her fellow wrestlers, and such envy has driven her to become one of the most fearsome rulebreakers in the entire sport!

GLUTTONY

First of all, let's be clear that we're not talking about an acute fondness for food here. This is gluttony in the sense of a ravenousness for power, for success, and for domination. And one woman seems to be driven by a gluttony that's frightening to behold: CHACALA. The LLF luchadora has made the sport her banquet, but no matter how many victories she gobbles up, it never seems enough to satisfy her craving for more. And in her insatiable urge for more, she is racking up tremendous triumphs, yes,but at the cost of building a small army of enemies who want nothing more than her head on a silver platter. La Chacala may soon find that her hunger is leading her to her own destruction!

LUST

An intense, obsessive, overwhelming desire. In short , PASSION. The 'Belle of Biloxi' has been plying her trade for some six years now, slowly and quietly working her way up the ladder, advancing from eager newcomer to seasoned veteran. An expert at both the most sophisticated of technical wrestling and the basest of rulebreaking, she has of late begun taking steps to make a deeper, more devastating impact on the sport, toying with her opponents and mocking them before subjecting them to abject defeat. It's perhaps no surprise that she now seeks to help fulfill her lust for success by allying herself with the Goddess Athena.

GREED

And speaking of ATHENA, we'd be hard pressed to name any other woman in the sport right now who best exemplifies this particular sin. The self-professed 'Goddess' has long made it known that she doesn't simply want to be the preeminent woman in independent pro wrestling, she wants to be the absolute power in the Professional Girl Wrestling Association. For almost two years gone by now, she has tried time and again to establish herself as the PGWA's dominant figure by guiding the fortunes of such women as Tiffani Monroe, Hellena Heavenly, Tasha Simone and Zip, but with only limited success. Now, with Passion, she may well have a woman at her side who can help her carry out her dreams of absolute control. And if Passion cannot do it, Athena may find success with a few of the other names the grapevine has been whispering about who may soon be joining her stable,!

SLOTH

'Laziness' tends to be a word missing in the dictionaries of most pro wrestlers. After all, it takes countless hours of hard work in the gym for any woman to be qualified enough to step into a ring and make a good showing of herself. But sometimes a wrestler puts herself through such a grueling regimen, yet allows slothfulness to overtake other areas of her career. Such is the case with CAMRON STAR. As Allie Spirit, she was building a large fanbase for herself, as people appreciated her hard work and vibrant determination. But while she had an abundance of goodwill from the fans, what Allie was lacking were victories and championship gold. She grew tired of having to learn the business the hard way, and out of that was birthed Camron, a villain as vicious as Allie was virtuous. By cutting corners through rule breaking, Camron quickly became a force to be reckoned with. But despite such seeming achievements, there's no denying that she lost something vital, and that courage, daring and integrity had been replaced by slothful indolence.

ANGER

One almost can't fault PERSEPHONE for being angry. It almost seems as if she's been topping the 'Next Big Thing' lists since her debut almost 7 years ago. Yet, the massive success that is surely her due has always seemed to elude her. And as Persephone knows as well as anyone, pro wrestling's history is littered with 'Should Have Been's' who never quite were. So yes, she's an angry woman, angry at the peers who seem to leapfrog her up the ladder of success, angry at the business which continually fails to fully appreciate her talent and ability, and often seemingly angry at the whole wide world. Now, anger can be a useful thing, if properly channeled. But all too frequently in Persephone's case, she has allowed her anger to cloud her judgment and inhibit he opportunities. Witness her recent match with Nikki Roxx for the PGWA title, in which Persephone made a string of mistakes which ultimately cost her the fight as well as the glory of possessing the belt. We can't help but think that if Persephone could only control her anger, make it work for her, she might very well be the most dangerous woman in the sport. But until she learns to do so, she will find her anger to be her deadliest opponent.
